Born 1965, Cairns
Ruben Ambrym lives in Yarrabah, Far North Queensland, and is of Kuku Yalanji descent on his mother’s side, from the area around Wujal Wujal, and South Sea Islander heritage.
Ruben is from a family of talented artists – his wife, Edna, and daughter, Valmai, are resident artists at the Yarrabah Arts Centre. Ruben himself is a part-time artist who was introduced to etching by printmaker Dian Darmansjah during workshops presented by Djumbunji Press, and found a medium he enjoyed working with. Ruben often attends the Yarrabah Arts Centre and enjoys exploring linoprint, painting and pottery as further media for his artistic expression.
This etching, produced in 2009, is of ‘Yarrie’ (Yarrabah) Bay where Ruben spends much of his time fishing and hunting.
