Jessie Hall grew up in Cairns, and is now based in Melbourne. Hall’s practice explores the role and transformation of tension within civilised interaction. Working across the media of drawing, sculpture and installation, her work is driven by notions of behaviour and ridicule, pivoting around carnal desire.
Familiar form and objects are reconstructed to become something that is unfamiliar, gestural and suggestive. Her current practice is influenced by the paradoxical response provoked by traditional and contemporary modes of tragedy, exploring the role of catharsis, pleasure and humour in the face of human suffering.
